ACTION PLAN FOR MODEL eVILLAGE IN MAHAVILACHCHIYA FOR 2008-2010

FOLLOWING IS THE ACTION PLAN FOR HORIZON LANKA’S MAHAVILACHCHIYA, THE MODEL EVILLAGE PROJECT OF SRI LANKA FOR THE PERIOD OF 2008-2010.

We hope to work on the following areas during 2008-2010 period and we expect your comments on this action plan. We also need your support to make this plan a success by helping us by volunteering to share your knowledge in the following items. University students, ICT employees, youth, Diaspora, foreign volunteers are welcome. Please contact us on 077-7702678 by telephone or info@horizonlanka.org through emails.

  1. Increasing computer literacy in the village up to 500 (per year)  
  2. Uploading Online resumes of the youth with video clips (Sinhala/English)
  3. Reporting special talents of the individuals of the community online
  4. Make www.mahavilachchiya.net a constantly updated living site
  5. Administrating Mahavilachchiya blog
  6. Making mesh internet network productive network for children. Each student is expected to send these to eVillage project manager electronically.
      1. write an email at least once a week to the e-mentor
      2. write 5 emails to 5 friends per week
      3. Write an English essay once a week
      4. Create a PowerPoint presentation once a month
      5. Create an Excel sheet for one month’s expenses of the house
      6. Create a graphic work with Paint/Photoshop once a week
      7. Create a webpage and update it monthly
      8. Maintain an online blog
      9. IMing with friends, etc. in English with an adult’s supervision
      10. Maintaining Flickr picture galleries and  YouTube video galleries
      11. Downloading and playing educational games
      12. Getting used to internet banking
      13. Using VOIP for productive purposes.
      14. Using Mapping/Google Earth
      15. News reading (sending the most talked about local news, foreign news, sports news, etc. to the Project Team)
  7. Making mesh internet network a productive network for youth
      1. Create a webpage and update it weekly
      2. Maintain an online blog
      3. IMing with friends, etc. in English
      4. Maintaining Flickr photo galleries and , YouTube video galleries
      5. Reading online news in English and local languages
      6. Researching for jobs and emailing applications
      7. Using internet for entertainment (audio, video, games, etc.)
      8. Internet banking
      9. Paying online bills
      10. Emailing
      11. VOIP
      12. Introducing to Social Networking Sites

8. Making mesh productive network for general public

      1. Internet banking
      2. Paying online bills
      3. Reading news sites
      4. Entertainment
      5. Investing in the share market
      6. Emailing
      7. VOIP
      8. e-channeling

9. Making IT possible for all kind of people in the village (clergy, teachers, doctors, ayurvedic doctors, forces personnel, businessmen, government servants, mechanics, etc.)

10. Teaching literacy to illiterate using PCs

11. Get media coverage to eVillage project through print and electronic media

12. Teaching ICT to Civil Security Forces, police and army, youth clubs, community clubs, etc.

13. Specific increase in productivity in farming and bringing a brand name for Mahavilachchiya agricultural products.

14. Getting funds to cover whole village with mesh – we have given coverage only to 1/4 of the village (we have to cover the rest of the village with expanding mesh or introducing WiMax or 3G)

15. Need to make at least few of the 30 “meshed up” houses kiosks for others to use Internet, photocopy, laminating, telephone calls, etc.

16. Having workshops to community in the village at Horizon Lanka computer lab

17. Encouraging the farmers to start e-commerce  with super markets chains in Sri Lanka.

18. Promoting e-health /Ayurveda

19. Promoting e-agriculture

20. Promoting ecotourism

21. Promoting cultural identity

22. Expanding Business Process Outsourcing (A new company is already registered for this process and the work began in April 2007. The new company, OnTime Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Already carries out work for John Keells Holdings and Dialog Telekom in Colombo while discussions are underway to start new ventures with some other clients as well.)

23. Introducing income generating Projects

24. Gaining overall sustainability, last but not the least. All above activities will be focused on this.

25. Getting connected to similar ventures in Sri Lanka and abroad.
